Metacam

Metacam provides relief from inflammation and pain in both acute and chronic conditions of the musculoskeletal system. Metacam is available as a suspension for dogs, cats, and horses, and as tasty chewable tablets for dogs. Since the suspension has a different strength (amount of active ingredient per ml of suspension) for each species and the dosage differs per species, the suspensions should not be used for a different animal than the target species to prevent overdose or reduced effectiveness.

The action of Metacam

The active ingredient in Metacam is meloxicam. Meloxicam is a so-called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces inflammation and relieves pain.

Metacam for dogs

For dogs, Metacam is available in 1.5 mg/ml suspension, available in 10 ml, 32 ml, 100 ml, and 180 ml sizes, and chewable tablets of 1 and 2.5 mg. Metacam provides relief from inflammation and pain in both acute and chronic conditions of the musculoskeletal system in dogs. The suspension can be easily administered using either the dropper attached to the bottle (for very small breeds) or the included dosing syringe.

Metacam for cats

Metacam Cat is a 0.5 mg/ml suspension, available in 3 ml, 15 ml, and 30 ml sizes. Metacam Cat provides relief from inflammation and pain in acute and chronic conditions of the musculoskeletal system, just like in dogs. It also provides relief from mild to moderate acute pain and inflammation after surgical procedures. The suspension can easily be administered with the dropper attached to the bottle, regardless of body weight. For cats weighing at least 2 kg, the included dosing syringe can also be used.

Administration of Metacam

For dogs, cats, and horses, the suspension should be administered orally by mixing it with food or directly into the mouth. Most animals find Metacam palatable, making it easy to administer. The included dosing syringe has a weight indication in kg. Due to the different dosages for different species, the syringes for Metacam Dog, Cat, and Horse are different and should not be exchanged. Shake the suspension before use. After administering the medication, close the bottle with the cap, rinse the dosing syringe with warm water, and let it dry.

Medications and supplements alongside Metacam

Metacam is primarily prescribed to relieve pain and inflammation in the musculoskeletal system, including bones, muscles, or joints. Alongside Metacam, additional medications, supplements, and movement and nutrition advice are often recommended to support mobility. These may include cage or stall rest or specific movement recommendations, weight loss for overweight animals, and other pain relievers. Bones, muscles, and joints can also be supported from the inside with supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids are known for their lubricating properties and anti-inflammatory effects. For dogs and cats, fish oil, such as that in Seraquin or Vetoquinol Care Omega 3-6, provides the fatty acids EPA and DHA. Flexadin can also support the joints of cats and dogs and help them stay agile.

The joints of horses can be supported with Sectolin Glucosamine-Chondroitin-MSM. For strong and flexible muscles, Equistro Mega Base contains amino acids (the building blocks of proteins), vitamin E, magnesium, and electrolytes.
