Optimmune Canis
Optimmune Canis eye ointment is used to treat chronic dry eyes (keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS)) and chronic corneal inflammation in dogs. Optimmune Canis is only available with a prescription from your veterinarian.
Active Ingredient
The active ingredient in this ointment is ciclosporin 2 mg/g.
Application
Optimmune Canis eye ointment is available in a 3.5-gram tube. First, clean the eye with suitable, non-irritating solutions, such as Ophta Clean. Apply 1 cm of Optimmune Canis ointment to the affected eye every 12 hours. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the condition and the response to treatment but is often lifelong. Avoid skin contact when applying. Please read the leaflet before use.
Other Treatments for Dry Eyes
If your dog suffers from KCS, it means that their tear glands produce insufficient tear fluid. Tear fluid protects the eye, keeping the cornea—the surface of the eye—moist and clean. It also provides the eyes with essential nutrients and helps prevent inflammation. If tears are not produced sufficiently, the cornea will dry out and become more susceptible to infections.
The goal of Optimmune Canis is to combat inflammation in the tear gland and stimulate the gland to produce tear fluid again. This is often a long-term process or even a lifelong treatment, and your dog may continue to experience dry eyes. Your veterinarian will usually recommend administering artificial tears, such as Lacriforte, several times a day. Eye ointment with vitamin A, such as Ophtosan, helps protect the cornea.
Tear fluid also helps fight infections, so dogs with dry eyes are more susceptible to eye infections. Pus-like discharge can be removed with a gentle eye cleaner such as Clean Ocular. Always consult your veterinarian if your dog shows symptoms of an eye infection (red eyes, swollen conjunctiva, pus-like discharge, increased squinting, or changes in the appearance of the cornea). Additional treatment with, for example, an antibiotic-containing eye ointment and/or pain relievers or anti-inflammatory drugs is often necessary.
