Panacur for Dogs and Cats

Panacur for dogs and cats contains the active ingredient fenbendazole. Fenbendazole is effective against many common roundworms and tapeworms and can also help treat giardia in dogs.
Panacur can be used in both adult dogs and cats as well as in puppies and kittens. Panacur should be administered for two (adult cats) or three (kittens, puppies, and adult dogs) consecutive days.

Panacur Pet Paste

Panacur Pet Paste is easy to administer to puppies and kittens. It is especially suitable for animals up to 6 kg. For heavier animals, more than one injector must be used, making tablets more practical in those cases.

Panacur Pet Paste contains 187.5 mg of fenbendazole per gram. Each injector contains 4.8 grams of paste, equivalent to 900 mg of fenbendazole. The plunger has 18 adjustable units, with each unit equal to 50 mg of fenbendazole. The desired number of units is set by turning the dosing ring on the plunger.

For adult cats, the dosage is 75 mg fenbendazole/kg body weight per day for 2 consecutive days. A daily dose for 2 kg of body weight equals 3 units on the plunger. The dosage schedule is as follows:

  • Up to 2 kg body weight: 3 units daily for 2 days
  • 2.1 to 4 kg body weight: 6 units daily for 2 days
  • 4.1 to 6 kg body weight: 9 units daily for 2 days, etc.

For kittens, puppies, and adult dogs, the dosage is 50 mg fenbendazole/kg body weight per day for 3 consecutive days. The dosage schedule is as follows:

  • 1.0 to 2 kg body weight: 2 units daily for 3 days
  • 2.1 to 3 kg body weight: 3 units daily for 3 days
  • 3.1 to 4 kg body weight: 4 units daily for 3 days
  • 4.1 to 5 kg body weight: 5 units daily for 3 days
  • 5.1 to 6 kg body weight: 6 units daily for 3 days

Panacur Tablets for Cats and Dogs

Panacur KH 250 tablets contain 250 mg of fenbendazole per tablet, Panacur KH 500 tablets contain 500 mg of fenbendazole per tablet.

The dosage is 50 mg/kg body weight for 3 consecutive days, which corresponds to 1 tablet per 5 kg (Panacur KH 250) or 10 kg (Panacur KH 500) of body weight.

The Importance of Deworming Dogs and Cats

Proper deworming of your dog and cat is very important. Worms can cause physical symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, coughing (lung and heartworm), stunted growth in puppies and kittens, lethargy, and weight loss in dogs and cats. In addition, some types of worms can also infect humans through dogs or cats. Because of the health risks to both pets and humans, preventing a worm infestation is crucial. Good and regular deworming of dogs and cats is therefore essential.

How Often Should Dogs and Cats Be Dewormed?

The recommended deworming schedule varies per animal and depends on living environment and conditions. Ask your veterinarian for advice. General recommendations:

  • Adult animals: Deworming your dog should generally be done 4 times a year. The same applies to deworming your cat. Pets that eat raw meat or hunt may require more frequent deworming. If you live in or travel to an area where heartworm or echinococcus occurs, more frequent deworming (with a product other than Panacur) is recommended.
  • Puppies: Deworming puppies is recommended at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks of age, then monthly until 6 months of age.
  • Kittens: Start deworming kittens at 3 weeks of age. Continue every 2 weeks until 2 weeks after weaning, then monthly until 6 months of age.

Panacur for Horses

Panacur Paste for horses contains the active ingredient fenbendazole.
It is suitable for the treatment of immature and mature stages of gastrointestinal worms: large and small strongyles, ascarids, pinworms, strongyloides, and immature and migrating larvae. Panacur Paste also has ovicidal activity.

Worms can cause serious problems in horses. Regular deworming of horses is therefore very important. Unfortunately, a lot of resistance to dewormers has developed in recent decades. Deworming based on a fixed schedule that applies to all horses is outdated. Nowadays, deworming is tailored to the individual and based on fecal testing. A deworming treatment for horses is only available by prescription from your veterinarian, all to minimize the risk of resistance.

Alternatives to Panacur

No Worm Diacur 500 mg tablets and Pet Paste contain exactly the same active ingredients as Panacur and can therefore serve as alternatives.

If you live in or travel to an area where the echinococcus tapeworm or heartworm is present, another deworming product such as Milbenin or Milpro may be necessary.
