Sporimune

Sporimune 50 mg/ml is used for the treatment of chronic cases of atopic dermatitis in dogs and as a symptomatic treatment of chronic allergic dermatitis in cats. The active ingredient in Sporimune is 50 mg ciclosporin per ml. Sporimune has anti-inflammatory and antipruritic properties. It is available in 25 ml, 50 ml, or 100 ml packaging, exclusively with a prescription from your veterinarian.

Administration and Dosage of Sporimune

For dogs, this veterinary medicine should be administered at least 2 hours before or after feeding. The product should be administered in a single dose directly into the mouth, on the back of the dog’s tongue, using the dosing syringe included in the package. For cats, this veterinary medicine can be administered with food or directly into the mouth.

For dogs, the average recommended dosage of ciclosporin is 5 mg/kg body weight (0,25 ml oral solution per 2,5 kg body weight).
For cats, the recommended dosage of ciclosporin is 7 mg/kg body weight (0,14 ml oral solution per kg).

Additional Medications and Supplements

Since atopy or allergic dermatitis is a chronic condition, lifelong or at least regular treatment is often necessary. Often, one specific medication is not enough, and the treatment involves multiple aspects.

Treating Secondary Infections and Inflammations of the Skin

Animals with atopy or allergic dermatitis may suffer from recurring infections that sometimes require medications such as antibiotics, medicated shampoos, or (ear) ointments. Often, the skin can be kept calm by regular use of a mild antibacterial shampoo or mousse like Douxo Pyo. Small scratch lesions benefit from a soothing ointment like Vetramil honey ointment. Dogs with atopy are at an increased risk of developing hotspots. In this case, Maxani Cleanser Spray or Dermacool Hotspot Spray are ideal for treating the affected area.

Supporting the Skin Barrier

The weakened skin barrier of dogs with atopy or cats with allergic dermatitis causes problems: on one hand, the protection against external invaders like bacteria and yeast is less effective, and on the other hand, the skin dries out much faster because the skin barrier is less able to retain moisture. Fortunately, the skin barrier can be supported with spot-ons and supplements, which can greatly contribute to improving the skin's condition.

Internally, you can support your pet’s skin barrier by providing extra omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) from fish oil, such as Megaderm or Vetoquinol Care Omega 3-6. Special diet food such as Sanimed Skin/Sensitive Dog or Sanimed Skin/Sensitive Cat also supports the sensitive skin of your dog or cat. You can also support your cat's or dog's skin barrier externally. Allerderm Spot-On contains a lipid complex that matches the composition and structure of the lipids in the skin barrier, helping to restore the skin barrier.

Caring for Sensitive Skin

A dog with sensitive skin should not be washed too often. If washing is necessary, use a mild, moisturizing shampoo like Dermoscent Atop 7 Shampoo or Allermyl. A honey-based shampoo is also very gentle and caring for your dog's atopic skin. If recurrent infections are present, it may be necessary to wash your dog regularly, so always follow your vet's advice. If your dog frequently suffers from ear infections, regular use of a cleansing ear cleaner such as CleanAural Sensitive can help keep the ears clean.

Washing cats is very stressful, so it is best to avoid it in most cases. However, a dry skin can be treated with a moisturizing lotion based on oatmeal, such as DermAllay Oatmeal Conditioner Spray. This spray is also suitable for dogs. For both dogs and cats, it is important to keep skin folds clean and dry using special wipes. Additionally, good flea control for your dog or cat prevents unnecessary scratching.

Atopy and allergic dermatitis are unpleasant chronic conditions that unfortunately never completely go away. Sadly, it is not uncommon for itching and skin inflammation to flare up from time to time despite medication like Sporimune. With proper care and medication, symptoms can often be well managed.
