Vetoryl
Vetoryl is suitable for the treatment of pituitary-dependent and adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease and syndrome) in dogs. Vetoryl is only available with a prescription from your veterinarian. Vetoryl is available in capsules of 5mg, 10mg, 30mg, 60mg, and 120mg. A package contains 30 capsules.
The Action of Vetoryl
The active ingredient in Vetoryl is trilostane. Trilostane inhibits the production of cortisol, corticosterone, and aldosterone. When used to treat hyperadrenocorticism, it reduces the production of glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoid steroids in the adrenal cortex. As a result, the plasma concentrations of these steroids are lowered.
Dosage of Vetoryl
The starting dosage of Vetoryl is approximately 2 mg/kg. However, individual responses in dogs may vary, and strict monitoring is essential to find the lowest possible dose that controls the clinical symptoms and to recognize any side effects at an early stage. Vetoryl is generally administered once daily, but sometimes your veterinarian may decide to switch to a twice-daily dose.
Special Precautions
Since most cases of Cushing's disease are diagnosed in older dogs, other underlying conditions are often present. The use of Vetoryl in dogs with liver disease or kidney failure is contraindicated. Dogs with Cushing's disease are more prone to developing pancreatitis and diabetes. During and before treatment with Vetoryl, dogs should be regularly examined.
Special Precautions for the Handler of the Veterinary Medicine
Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should avoid handling the capsules. The contents of the capsules can cause skin and eye irritation and hypersensitivity. The capsules should not be divided or opened: in case of accidental breaking of the capsules and contact of the granules with the eyes or skin, immediately rinse with plenty of water. If irritation persists, a doctor should be consulted. In case of accidental ingestion, a doctor should be consulted immediately, and the package leaflet or the outer carton should be shown.
