Sand flies in dogs

In addition to fleas and ticks, dogs can also suffer from other small creepy-crawlies like mosquitoes, lice, and mites. If you are going on holiday to southern countries, sandflies can cause the nasty disease Leishmaniasis. Good preparation is therefore important. Pharmacy4pets helps keep your dog free from bugs!

The Danger of Sandflies for Dogs

Sandflies are a type of small mosquito found in warmer countries. They are especially active during sunrise and sunset. Sandflies can transmit the Leishmania parasite, causing the unpleasant chronic disease Leishmaniasis.

After infection, it often takes years before the dog becomes ill. Dogs with Leishmaniasis lose weight, may develop skin issues, and can even die from the disease. The condition is treatable but not curable. Therefore, it is wise to prevent your dog from being infected with the Leishmania parasite!

Preventing Sandflies

If you are going on holiday to a country where sandflies are present, it is important to protect your dog as best as possible from sandflies.

The Scalibor Protector Band is a registered and approved product for use against sandflies. The band should be applied one week before traveling to an area where sandflies are present and will then be effective for five to six months. The Seresto Collar also reduces the risk of Leishmania transmission for eight months. If you prefer a spot-on product, you can choose, for example, Advantix (effective for two to three weeks) or Vectra 3D (effective for four weeks).
