Kitten food
A healthy life starts with good nutrition. Your kitten develops rapidly during the first year. Nutrition plays a crucial role in a healthy cat’s life, especially during the kitten phase. The best kitten food depends on your preference and that of your kitten. Pharmacy4pets has chosen kitten food from Sanimed, a Dutch quality brand developed by Prof. Dr. Ir. Anton Beynen, an authority in the field of animal nutrition. Sanimed is 100% natural and contains no artificial colors, fragrances, or flavorings.
Why kitten food is so important
A kitten is growing rapidly, and muscles, bones, organs, and the immune system need to develop. During growth, the need for protein, calcium, and phosphorus is truly different from that of adult or older cats, so special kitten food is very important. Sanimed Kitten perfectly supports the development and optimal growth of your little ball of energy.
The kibble supports the immune system and promotes a healthy condition of skin and coat thanks to its high omega-3 fatty acid content. Additionally, Sanimed kitten food supports a healthy environment in the bladder due to the low pH of the urine.
Your kitten will eat kitten food throughout the entire growth period. For most cats, this is from four weeks to twelve months of age. Very large breeds, such as the Maine Coon, continue to grow for a little longer and can have kitten kibble until they are fifteen months old. Once your cat has reached adulthood, it can switch to Sanimed Adult.
TIP: Keep your kitten entertained and feed the kibble in the Trixie Activity Ball: guaranteed hours of fun and slow eating!
Frequently asked questions about kittens and nutrition
- What should I feed my kitten when it just moves into my house? Moving to a new home is already exciting enough. If the food is also changed, this can cause a lack of appetite or diarrhea. It is best to feed your new kitten the food it was used to eating at its previous owner’s for the first two weeks. After that, you can gradually switch to the food you prefer over the course of one week by slowly mixing in more of the new food and less of the old one.
- My kitten isn’t eating, what should I do? Not eating can have various reasons. Your kitten might be very anxious, especially if it has just arrived. Calm, familiar scents, and known food help best in such cases. A Feliway diffuser for the socket helps your kitten to relax. Toys with catnip often have the same effect. To make the food more appealing, you can warm it in the microwave for a few seconds. The fats in the kibble will come to the surface, creating a more delicious aroma. A small dash of hot water over the kibble can have the same effect, although not all cats like the change in texture. A drop of water from a can of tuna (NOTE: tuna in water, not in oil and/or with tomato sauce or herbs) can do wonders, as can one drop (no more!) of valerian oil. Sometimes, a cat may refuse kibble but will eat wet food, a piece of cooked chicken, or a tasty treat like the Trixie Premio Carpaccio Cat Snack.
NB: Cats can react poorly to not eating, and kittens weaken especially quickly. If the above tips do not help to get your kitten to eat, or if it is lethargic or vomiting, always contact your veterinarian!
- How often should a kitten eat per day? The most natural way is to feed your cat small amounts throughout the day. For a kitten, it is especially important to get small portions more frequently, as its stomach is still very small, and its metabolism is fast. Some cats regulate this themselves and nibble throughout the day on their daily portion. If your kitten tends to eat everything at once, it is best to divide the food into at least three to four portions a day.
- Which is better, wet food or kibble for kittens? Both types of food have their benefits. Wet food contributes to a good hydration balance and is generally very tasty for kittens, which can help picky eaters to eat better. Kibble helps keep your kitten’s teeth clean, and it can be left out longer, allowing your kitten to decide when to eat. The combination is actually the best: it keeps your kitten’s taste buds stimulated, and you benefit from the advantages of both wet food and kibble!
