Playing with your kitten

By nature, cats are hunters. They have to work hard for their food. Cats that live mainly or exclusively indoors and are fed a few times a day can quickly become bored.

Playing helps keep your kitten fit and happy. Mimicking hunting behavior with a play wand or tossing small aluminum foil balls allows your kitten to express its natural instincts.

Instead of putting your kitten’s food in a bowl, you can use an activity ball, making your kitten work for its food. This not only prevents boredom but also promotes better satiety because your kitten eats more slowly. Plus, they’ll stop when they’re no longer interested in chasing the ball. The result: a better chance of maintaining a healthy weight!

Catnip toys have a dual function: the scent makes the toys highly appealing, encouraging your kitten to play with them. Additionally, catnip has a calming effect on your kitten, making it useful if your pet is feeling anxious or stressed.

Tips for playing with your kitten

Many pet owners think their cat doesn’t enjoy playing. While every cat is unique, some cats may be interested in play, but you might not be playing in a way that feels natural to them. Here are some tips:

  • Kittens can’t see clearly at a distance of about 30 cm. Avoid moving toys too close to them.
  • Success is important: let your kitten catch the “prey”! Laser pointers can be very frustrating and are therefore not recommended as toys.
  • Move the play wand away from your kitten, and let the “prey” hide around corners or under the couch.
  • Alternate between letting the toy stay still and moving it.
  • Switch between movement on the ground and in the air.
  • Encourage your kitten to stalk the toy from behind a “hiding spot,” such as a doorway or cushion.
  • Stop playing only when your kitten loses interest.
  • Strings and rubber bands are very tempting for kittens but can be extremely dangerous if swallowed.

Playing is more than just fun—it’s an outlet for excess energy and helps release frustration and tension. By letting your kitten exercise its natural prey-catching behavior through play, you can prevent it from seeing moving legs as prey or climbing curtains out of boredom. Although, for mischievous kittens, the latter might still remain tempting…
