AeroKat

With the AeroKat inhaler, after some practice, you can safely administer medication to your cat with asthma or bronchitis. Since the medication is inhaled, it causes fewer side effects. However, it does take some practice to teach your cat to accept the AeroKat. Pharmacy4pets is happy to help you with tips and tricks for using the AeroKat inhalation system.

Asthma or Bronchitis in Cats

Many cats that cough regularly suffer from chronic bronchitis or asthma. Both conditions are caused by inflammation of the deeper airways, leading to narrowed bronchi and increased mucus production.

Symptoms of bronchitis and asthma include:

  • Persistent coughing.
  • Labored breathing without noticeable sounds.
  • Sudden shortness of breath with a soft, wheezing sound (characteristic of asthma), which usually responds quickly to treatment.

Even after optimizing living conditions (see below), treatment is usually necessary for chronic bronchitis and asthma. Anti-inflammatory drugs are often required for life to keep inflammation under control. Bronchodilators are also frequently used. In humans with chronic bronchitis, this medication is usually administered through inhalation to minimize side effects. For cats, this is possible with the AeroKat inhalation system.

Using the AeroKat Inhaler

Using the AeroKat inhaler requires practice and patience. If you place the inhalation system over your cat’s nose without any training, they will not accept it immediately. We are happy to explain the general use of the AeroKat system. Additionally, you can watch the video below to see the best way to practice using AeroKat with your cat:

How to Use the AeroKat Inhalation System?

The spacer chamber helps in administering inhalation medication to your cat.

Preparation:

  1. Remove the spacer chamber from the packaging and check for any damage.
  2. Carefully read the instructions.
  3. Select the correct mask (two sizes included) and attach it to the front of the chamber. The mask should cover the nose and mouth but not the eyes.

Usage:

  1. Remove the cap and shake the inhaler according to the instructions.
  2. Insert the inhaler into the back of the spacer chamber and gently place the mask over your pet’s nose.
  3. Press the inhaler to release the medication and hold the mask in place until your cat has inhaled 5-6 times.
  4. If the sound of the inhaler scares your cat, press the inhaler behind your back first and then quickly place the mask.
  5. Administer one puff at a time and follow your veterinarian’s instructions regarding dosage and waiting times.
  6. After treatment, wipe your cat’s muzzle with a damp cloth to remove any medication residue.

Additional Tips for Asthma or Bronchitis

Both asthma and bronchitis symptoms can be triggered or worsened by exposure to irritants. Common examples include cigarette smoke, fireplace smoke, scented candles, plug-in air fresheners, strongly scented flowers, deodorant/perfume, and perfumed or dusty cat litter. It is essential to avoid exposing your cat with asthma or bronchitis to these triggers and ensure clean air in your home. Additionally, excess weight is a significant factor in bronchitis and asthma. If your cat is overweight, losing weight—for example, with Sanimed Weight Reduction—can literally give them more air.

You can also support your cat’s immune system by ensuring timely vaccinations, providing a balanced cat food, regularly deworming, and ensuring sufficient exercise.
