Iso-Gel
Iso-Gel is a complementary animal feed for dogs and cats that helps to firm up stools. It also supports bowel function and promotes intestinal activity/peristalsis, for example, in cases of hairballs, perineal hernia, or after anal gland removal. In these cases, Iso-Gel can help soften the stool.
How does Iso-Gel work for dogs and cats?
Iso-Gel consists of 99.95% psyllium. Psyllium, also known as flea seed, is derived from the husks of Plantago Ovata seeds, a plant mainly found in India and Iran. Psyllium is a fiber and is not absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract, allowing it to be effective where it is needed. When psyllium granules come into contact with water in the body, a gel is formed that binds water in the intestine. Through the breakdown of Iso-Gel in the large intestine by gut flora, its water-binding capacity increases even further. Iso-Gel increases stool bulk and influences its consistency. Iso-Gel regulates bowel transit time. The increase in intestinal content stimulates muscle tone and the peristalsis of the intestinal wall. Iso-Gel supports intestinal function, promotes normal digestion, and can help make stools firmer or softer depending on the situation.
What can Iso-Gel be used for?
Iso-Gel can help firm up stools and is therefore often used to support the treatment of diarrhea in dogs or diarrhea in cats.
Because Iso-Gel attracts water, it can help soften stools in cases of constipation. Note: If the dog or cat is unable to defecate and a complete blockage is present, Iso-Gel MUST NOT be used.
The combination of the gel-like layer that forms around the stool and its effect on intestinal peristalsis makes Iso-Gel particularly suitable for cats with hairballs.
How do you give Iso-Gel to your dog or cat?
The recommended amount of Iso-Gel is indicative and can be adjusted according to your pet's needs. However, it is advised not to exceed the maximum recommended amount.
- Dog: 2 – 5 teaspoons of approximately 3 ml, 1 to 2 times daily mixed with food.
- Cat: 2 teaspoons of approximately 3 ml, 1 to 2 times daily mixed with food.
Iso-Gel consists of granules that can be easily mixed with food. Always ensure that fresh drinking water is available.
The recommended usage duration is 1 – 2 weeks. It should not be used for more than 12 weeks.
Medications and supplements in combination with Iso-Gel
Iso-Gel is used to support various gastrointestinal problems in dogs and gastrointestinal problems in cats. It is often not used as the only supplement but in combination with medications, food, and/or other dietary supplements.
Probiotics such as Protexin Pro-Kolin Advanced or Purina Pro Plan FortiFlora for dogs or Purina Pro Plan FortiFlora for cats help restore the balance of bacteria in the gut (gut flora or microbiome) together with Iso-Gel. An imbalance can occur, for example, with diarrhea or after an antibiotic treatment.
If your dog or cat has a sensitive stomach, a special, easily digestible diet such as Sanimed Intestinal Dog or Sanimed Intestinal Cat can support the stomach and intestines.
For hairballs in cats, an additional hairball paste such as Kat-a-Lax or Lax-A-Past may be useful.
