What are prescription-only veterinary medicines?

Legislation has determined which veterinary medicines can be obtained without a prescription, which veterinary medicines can be obtained from a veterinarian and which veterinary medicines can only be dispensed from a pharmacy with a prescription from a veterinarian. Since we are not a veterinarian, but an online pharmacy, we may dispense some veterinary medicines that you can obtain from your veterinarian without a prescription only with a prescription from a veterinarian.

How do I recognize a prescription-only veterinary medicine in your online store?

You can recognize prescription-only medicines in our online store in different ways. For a prescription medicine, you will always see an orange label in the upper left corner of the product image:

You must also enter and/or upload the required prescription information before you can place this kind of products in your shopping cart.
You should therefore read our terms and conditions for prescription medication and, if agreed, accept them.

How do I order a prescription-only veterinary medicine?

If you order prescription-only veterinary medicines, you must have a valid prescription from a veterinarian.

Before you can place a prescription-only veterinary medicine in your shopping cart, you must enter and/or upload the necessary prescription information. You should therefore read our terms and conditions for prescription medication and, if agreed, accept them.

After you have placed and paid for your order, our pharmacist will review your prescription and order. If your prescription is approved, your order will be processed and shipped to you as soon as possible. If your prescription is not (yet) approved, we may ask you for more additional information. You will always receive a message about this.

Please send us the original prescription on paper by post (within one week after ordering). We must keep the original prescription in our possession. Please write your order number on the prescription so that we can link it to your order. Please frank the post sufficiently or, if you wish to trace the prescription, send it by registered mail. Did your veterinarian send you the prescription digitally? Please ask your veterinarian to send the digital, original prescription directly to us by email.

Please note that the time from ordering to delivery takes longer than usual, as there are more processes involved.

If you have ordered a prescription-only veterinary medicine, but you cannot provide a valid, original prescription, we are forced to cancel your order.

What information must be included on a prescription?

  • The date of prescribe;
  • The name, active ingredient, pharmaceutical form and strength of the veterinary medicinal product;
  • The species and name of the animal;
  • The prescribed quantity or number of packages and the size of the package;
  • The dosing schedule;
  • The withdrawal period (only for food-producing species, even if it is 0);
  • If a veterinary medicinal product is prescribed via the cascade, a statement to that effect;
  • The full name and contact details of the animal owner;
  • The veterinarian's full name, contact details and vet number;
  • The signature or similar electronic form of identification of the veterinarian.

Please have the prescription written out in English or German to ensure the readability of the prescription and therefore faster processing of your order.

Is it possible to order more prescription-only veterinary medicines with one prescription?

It depends on the type of prescription and the veterinary medicine whether you can order the veterinary medicine more than once with your prescription. A vet can write a prescription per package, but can also write a repeat prescription, for example. As of January 28, 2022, a prescription will no longer have a validity period in the Netherlands, which means that a veterinarian may write out a prescription for a longer duration of therapy.

We supply prescription medication for a maximum of 3 months, if the prescription permits.

Why can’t I order more packages of some prescription-only veterinary medicines?

For some prescription-only veterinary medicines we have set a maximum number of packages that can be ordered, because we supply prescription medication for a maximum of 3 months.

Why do I need to send you the original prescription?

As a pharmacy we have to follow certain rules. As described when ordering the veterinary medicine and in our procedure for ordering prescription-only veterinary medicines, we as a pharmacy must obtain and keep the original prescription in our possession.

I have a repeat prescription, but I don't want to send the original prescription. Can I still order?

Unfortunately, this is not possible. As described when ordering the veterinary medicine and in our procedure for ordering prescription-only veterinary medicines, we as a pharmacy must obtain and keep the original prescription in our possession.

Can you contact my vet about my prescription?

Your vet will not be allowed to provide us with any personal or patient details when we ask. Unfortunately, you will therefore have to contact your vet yourself.

I want to order a prescription-only veterinary medicine, but I don't have a prescription. What do I do now?

We always require a prescription from a veterinarian to supply prescription-only medicines. If you do not have a prescription, you can ask your veterinarian to write a prescription for you. It is customary for your veterinarian to charge a small fee for writing a prescription.
